Breast Cancer and Brain Metastases

Amplification of the HER2 gene in breast cancer is a risk factor for the development of brain metastases.1

A multivariate analysis of the metastatic site by tumour subtype demonstrated that HER2-enriched subtypes of breast cancer were associated with a significantly increased risk of brain metastases compared with luminal A tumours.1

Additional risk factors for brain metastases in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer are young age (≤40 years), tumour size >2 cm, nodal metastases, absence or late start of adjuvant anti-HER2 therapy, and the development of lung metastases at the primary site of relapse.2
